Get To Know Jamie
In my years working with individuals navigating deep personal trauma and high-stakes survival stress, I saw a recurring heartbreak: the more someone is hurting, the more desperately they crave connection—yet the harder it becomes to risk the vulnerability needed to get it. We build walls to protect ourselves, but those same walls inadvertently lock out the people we love the most. I believe human connection isn’t about being perfect; it’s about building a safe enough harbor where two people can finally drop their armor and risk being seen again.
For years, my clinical foundation was forged within the federal Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system. There, I walked closely with individuals carrying the heavy burdens of trauma, chronic survival stress, and moral injury. While that work was profoundly rewarding, it taught me an invaluable truth: the individual cannot fully heal in a vacuum. True, lasting resilience thrives when the relationship at home becomes a secure sanctuary rather than another source of tension.
I transitioned my practice into the Western North Carolina community to focus entirely on treating the relationship itself. Because I deeply understand the complex internal world of the individual, I am able to hold a balanced, entirely objective space for both of you. I am not easily shocked, I don’t take sides, and there is no conflict too big, messy, or chaotic for us to untangle together. I am genuinely willing to sit with your heaviest, most complex relational moments without judgment.

How It Works & What To Expect for Couples Counseling
Starting couples therapy can feel intimidating, but having a clear map of the journey ahead can help ease that anxiety. Our work together is divided into structured phases so we can safely and effectively untangle your relationship patterns.
-
We do not guess at what is broken; we map it out clearly together. Your initial assessment takes place across three distinct steps:
Before Your First Session: You will each receive and complete comprehensive intake forms through a secure online portal. This allows you to privately share your background and goals before we ever meet.
Our First Session (Joint Assessment): We will sit down together to review your forms, gather your history, and learn your shared story. We will openly discuss the current challenges that brought you into the room.
Our Second Session (Individual Perspectives): This session is divided into two separate, 50-minute individual sessions. I will meet with each partner entirely one-on-one. This gives me a chance to understand your individual history, family background, and personal goals for the relationship.
Our Third Session (The Roadmap): We come back together as a team. I will share my clinical feedback, we will collaborate on the path forward, and we get straight to work implementing your unique plan.
-
Each partnership is entirely unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to human connection. We will draw from evidence-based frameworks to target your specific communication loops, break down defensive walls, and practice active, real-time repair in the room. Participation in between-session practices is the single biggest factor in determining the overall length and success of your therapy. As the saying goes, you get out of it what you put into it.
Therapy doesn’t just happen on my couch; it happens in the choices you make at home. Actively practicing your new communication tools between our appointments is the best way to integrate our in-session work and create lasting, meaningful change in your daily life.
-
To ensure we are staying on track, we will periodically (typically every 3 months) review your progress together and adjust our approach accordingly. As these new habits take root, we will begin to taper the frequency of sessions, allowing you to fully step into your shared life together as you gently transition out of clinical therapy.
Pause. Pivot. Flow.
Healing Begins By Creating Space For Change.
You are not broken. You are not failing. And you do not have to navigate everything alone. Therapy can help you reconnect with yourself, your relationships, your resilience, and the life you want to move toward.
